The Rise of the Freelance Spa Therapist

The Rise of the Freelance Spa Therapist

Something is shifting in the spa industry. Where once the path was straightforward — train, get hired, stay put — an increasing number of skilled therapists are choosing a different route. They're going freelance.

The pandemic changed how therapists think about work. Many were furloughed or let go entirely, and when the industry rebuilt, a significant number chose not to return to permanent roles. Instead, they discovered they could earn more per day, choose their own schedules, and work across multiple properties.

Three factors are driving the shift. Day rates for experienced therapists have risen sharply — a senior therapist with strong brand knowledge can command between £150 and £250 per day. Flexibility matters too — many therapists are parents, carers, or simply people who value control over their time. And variety keeps things interesting — working across different properties means exposure to different brands, treatment menus, and guest expectations.

The trade-offs are real. Freelancers miss out on pension contributions, paid holidays, and team camaraderie. There's the admin of invoicing, insurance, and tax returns. During quieter months, bookings can dry up. But for those who plan well and build a strong reputation, the freelance model offers something the traditional route often doesn't: autonomy.

Forward-thinking properties are adapting. Rather than seeing freelancers as a stopgap, they're building hybrid teams — a core permanent staff supplemented by trusted freelancers who know the property and its standards.

Our agency matching system connects freelance therapists with luxury properties based on skills, brand experience, location, and availability. Your profile works for you, matching you with shifts that genuinely fit your expertise.
